Collegians Suffer Tough Loss To Black Bears To End Season
July 17, 2013
The Collegians came out swinging the bats well leading the game through the top of the 5th (5-2). However, in the bottom of the 5th, the Black Bears answered with a timely home run to tie the game up 5-5. The Collegians answered by putting up two runs in the top of the 6th, taking the lead 7-5, but it would be answered again in the bottom half of the inning by a Black Bears three run home run to take back the lead (8-7). The Collegians were unable to push a run across in the top of the 7th, suffering the loss. Shortstop Haden Houska led the way offensively for the Collegians going 4-4 with 2 RBI's. Head Coach Brett Manning said, "This was a heartbreaker as we held the reins of the game until that big blast by the Black Bears in the bottom of the sixth. I felt Pollock had a great outing for us despite a few mistakes throughout the game that ended up leaving the park. Overall, I was proud of my guys to come together as well as they did toward the end of the season after going through a very rough middle of the season. They were a blast to coach and I'm looking forward to next year!"

Collegians Get Through Toughest Part of Schedule with 13 Games in 8 Days
June 16, 2013
When attempting to find the time to fit 50 games into 2 1/2 months, scheduling can sometimes become an issue. The 2013 resurrection season for the Collegians has proven to be no different. From Saturday 6/8 - 6/15, the team played 13 games in 8 days, only 3 of which were non league. The arduous stretch took it's toll on the players and coaching staff but the team was able to walk away with 6 wins, while staying above .500 in league play. Every player chipped in and did their part over the past 8 days. Tired bodies and arms earned a well deserved day off before playing the first place Colts on Monday night (June 17th).
"I'm extremely proud of our guys," said Head Coach Brett Manning. "Going through such a long stretch of games with many nights being long double headers, it was great see everyone contribute and battle through the grind. I feel we could have won a couple more games if we played our best baseball at some critical times, but we are still getting a feel for how everyone plays and is best coached and I am looking forward to seeing how good this team can be by the end of the season!"
Multiple appearances from position players out of the bull pen gave the Collegians the boost they needed to survive. Outfielder AJ Shaw, Infielders Nick Hammeke, Julian Moroyoqui, Drew Clark, and Greg Reynolds all made appearances on the mound in the past week. Spot starts from two veteran arms also gave the Collegian starting pitchers the much needed rest on saturday's games to make the push through the rest of the season. While the remainder of the Collegians schedule won't as packed as the last 8 days, it doesn't get any easier as the Collegians start out the week hosting the league-leading Arvada Colts (6/17) at home and then have a four game road trip to Kansas to face Jayhawk League teams the following week facing the Liberal Bee Jays and Hays Larks.
The Collegians are now 9-10 overall, and 6-5 in league play, putting them in a tie for 7th place in the RMBL. The Collegians are second in the league with 89 Runs scored and 4 out of their last 5 losses have been by one run. The coaching staff is happy with the run total, but feels the team can do a better job of finishing games. "So far we have been a 'big inning' team," said Manning. "When we roll, we definitely roll, but we put up a lot of zeros (offensively) sometimes and leave a lot of runners stranded."
The Collegians look to continue their run scoring capacity when they face the Colts, who are number one in the league for runs against.

The Collegians received some solid pitching outings, however fell short in game two on a controversial game ending play at the plate with runners on second and third and two outs. Coach Manning stated, "We came out today and had a very fun day of baseball. Our pitchers received some much needed rest and it was nice to see some guys hit the ball hard such as Deichler. I thought Guegan got in there safely (on the play to end the second game) but 'it is what it is' and the umpire saw what he saw." The Collegians are back in action on Monday, June 17th at 6:00 pm at home vs. the league leading Arvada Colts.
